Dr. Xiansheng Sun, Senior Advisor & Distinguished Research Fellow

Oil and Gas; Internaitonal energy politics

Dr Sun Xiansheng has more than 30 years of experience in the oil & gas industry, and has accumulated practical industry experience in oil & gas production, trading and pipeline construction. Until July 2020, he was  IEF Secretary General. Prior to his IEF post, Dr Sun was the President of China National Petroleum Corporation’s (CNPC) Economics and Technology Research Institute (ETRI) where he lead a team of over 370 staff members. In previous roles he has served as Director of the Legal & Contract Department of CNPC International Cooperation Bureau, Vice President of CNODC (China National Exploration and Development Company), Chairman of JOC and President of Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company CNPC and also President of PetroDar company.  Dr Sun also served as Chairman of the CNPC subsidiary companies in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, and as Chairman and Chief Negotiator of China Kazakhstan Oil Pipeline Co. Moreover, as a representative of the Chinese government, Dr Sun participated in the dialogue with OPEC and worked as chief coordinator in setting and revising production sharing contracts both for crude oil and unconventional gas for CNPC. Dr Sun holds an LLM and Ph.D from the University of Dundee, UK.

Prof. Xiao-ping Zhang, Distinguished Research Fellow

Energy Internet; Smart Grids; Power system modelling and control; energy marekt

Professor Zhang's research fields include Energy Union, Global Power & Energy Internet, Super Power Grids, Smart Grids, modelling and control of FACTS and HVDC, renewable generation (wind and wave) control, integration of EVs into power grids, energy markets & game theory applications, smart metering, distributed energy management and services for homes and buildings and wide area grid awareness. He is a Professor of Electrical Power Systems, Director of Smart Grid, Birmingham Energy Institute, and Co-Director of Birmingham Energy Storage Centre sponsored by UK, and Head of the Electrical Power & Control Systems Group. Professor Zhang is Chair of the IEEE WG on Test Systems for Economic Analysis and also Secretary of IFAC Technical Committee on Power and Energy Systems Control. He is advisor to the IEEE PES UK & Ireland Chapter. He published the visionary article on Smart Energy Community for Smart Cities in the IEEE Smart City News Letter in 2018. 

Dr. James Cheong, Senior Research Fellow

Econometrics; applied economic modelling; CGE; Machine Learning; Neural Network Analysis

Dr Cheong is experienced in the study of economic problems using various econometric software and statistical tools. He is Assistant Professor at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. He has an extensive knowledge in applied economic modelling and a wide range of analytical techniques, including Distribution Dynamics Analysis, CGE, Machine Learning, and Neural Network Analysis. He worked as a consultant for PwC Australia by conducting CGE economic analysis. He has also offered professional training to many international firms and professional associations, for example, the Australian Federal Treasury, China Construction Bank, and the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants. He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Western Australia (UWA), and he holds a Master of Applied Finance from the University of Western Sydney (UWS).  He also has a Master’s degree in International Relations from Griffith University (Griff).

Dr.Xin Gu, Senior Research Fellow

International trade; Industrial organisation; Economic development; Market design; Energy interconnection 

Dr Gu’s areas of interest include empirical international trade, empirical industrial organisation, economic development, and market design, with a focus on energy interconnection and the Chinese economy. Dr. Xin Gu is currently an associate professor at the School of Economics and Management, Southeast University. Dr. Gu also served as head of MIB program, Southeast- Monash Joint Program, and reviewers for a number of academic journals. She holds a PhD in Economics from James Cook University, Australia, Master in Economics, and a Bachelor of Finance from Southeast, China.

Dr. Qiang Ji, Senior Research Fellow

Big data and energy finance; energy economics; financial econometrics

Dr. Ji's research interest covers broad areas of big data and energy finance, energy economics and energy strategy management, forecast modelling and risk management and financial econometrics. He is an Associate Professor in the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He has published more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals in energy, finance and economics. He is the principle investigator of over ten grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and CAS. He is an associate editor for International Review of Financial Analysis, the co-founder of China Energy Finance Network, and the Council Member of Chinese Society of Low Carbon Development Management and Chinese Society of Energy Resources Systems Engineering. He received his PhD in Management Science and Engineering from CAS in 2011. 

Dr. Yu Liu, Senior Research Fellow

Economic and enviromental impact assessment; CGE modelling 

Dr Liu’s areas of interest include the policy of energy and environment, economics of energy and enviroment, with a focus on the assessment of economic impact and enviromental performance of those policies using the CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) model. Dr. Yu Liu is currently a professor at the Institutes of Science and Development, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Liu also served as research fellow of Peking University, guest professor at   University of Inha, Korea and reviewers for a number of academic journals. He holds a PhD in Economics Management from institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Mr. Hari MP, Senior Research Fellow

Modelling of energy markets and policies; North American electricity markets; LNG and pricing and trade

Hari is an expert in quantitative modelling of energy markets and policies. His research interests include transition of North American electricity markets, global LNG and pricing and trade of energy commodities. He works with the corporate strategy team at Emera Inc, a large North American integrated utility. Prior to that, he was working as an energy markets consultant with a Hong Kong based strategy consultancy. He also worked as an energy economist (Research Fellow) with the Energy Studies Institute, National University of Singapore. During time with ESI, he has published research papers and book chapters on the topics of LNG pricing, LNG trade analysis, liberalization of Asian natural gas markets, energy commodity prices, Cost Benefit Analysis of green transportation, integration of renewables and economics of battery energy storage for electricity grid level applications. Hari holds a Master of Science in Financial Engineering (First Class) from National University of Singapore, Master of Business Administration (General Management) from FMS, Delhi and a Bachelor of Technology in Electronics and Communication Engineering (with Distinction) from National Institute of Technology, Calicut.

Dr. Suwin Sandu, Senior Research Fellow

Energy policy and modelling; I-O Analysis

Dr. Suwin Sandu is an energy policy and modelling expert. He joined University of Technology Sydney (UTS) in 2010. Prior to that, he worked at the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) for four years, where he was responsible for undertaking economic research and policy analysis of issues relating to energy in both Australian and international markets. Key research projects that he had undertaken include: long-term projections of Australia's energy demand-supply and associated greenhouse gas emissions; analysis of the impact of energy policies in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Australia; analysis of economy-wide energy efficiency improvements; assessment of the international oil and gas markets and their implications for Australia; and economic assessment of Australian energy resources. He received a PhD and Master degree in energy planning and policy from UTS.  

Prof. Yongping Sun, Senior Research Fellow

Resource management; Carbon market

Prof  Sun's research focuses on resources management and ETS. He is Professor and "Tenglong Scholar" of Hubei University of Economics, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Environmental Economics, and Visiting Scholar at Nagoya University and Groningen University. As a core member of the committee of experts of the Hubei ETS, he contributed to the policy design in allowances allocation and carbon leakage. He has published more than 50 academic papers and undertaken more than 12 research projects, including the National Social science Fund of China and the UK Global Prosperity Strategy Fund. He was awarded the Social Science Outstanding Achievements Award of Hubei Province. He obtained B.E from Xidian University and Master and PhD in economics from Wuhan University.

Dr. Roc Shi Xunpeng, Dean & Chief Economist

Energy and environmental economics; Southeast Asian energy sector; LNG pricing; Coal sector

Dr. Shi's areas of expertise include environmental and energy economics, sustainable development, and the Chinese economy, with regional focuses on Australia, ASEAN, and Northeast Asia. He has been worked in the energy sector for more than 20 years in the industry, government, research institute, and international organization in Australia, Brunei, China, Indonesia, and Singapore and has undertaken assignments in numerous other countries. He is a Principal Research Fellow at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). He has published about 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals. The RePEC database ranks him to be among the Top 17% economists in Australia based on the research contributions and publications outputs.  He has advised many international organizations and national governments. He received LLM from the University of Dundee, MERE and Ph.D. of Economics from the Australian National University.

Dr. Muyi Yang, Senior Research Fellow

Politicla science; institituons and governance 

Dr. Yang's research interest includes energy transition and technological change, institutions and governance, and energy market policy.  He is a researcher at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and is also a visiting researcher at Data61, CSIRO, Australia. Before joining UTS, he worked at the New South Wales Department of Industry as Policy Officer, responsible for undertaking the analysis of energy and environmental policy issues. He is actively engaged in teaching, research and consulting in energy policy themes. He received a PhD degree in energy planning and policy from UTS.  

Prof. Dayong Zhang, Senior Research Fellow

Energy economics; energy finance; banking and finance

Prof. Zhang‘s research interest covers energy economics, energy finance, banking and finance, and general economic and financial issues in emerging economies. He is a Professor of Financial Economics at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, China. He is the principle investigator of over ten research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), British Academy, and other sources. He is the co-founder of China Energy Finance Network and an associate editor of journals including: International Review of Financial Analysis, International Review of Economics and Finance, Finance Research Letters, and International Journal of Emerging Markets. Professor Zhang received his PhD from the University of Birmingham (UK).

Ms. Xin (Maggie) Zheng, Project Manager

Data Analytics

Maggie is an expert on energy data analysis. She obtained her LLM in International Trade from the Center of Energy, Petroleum, Mineral Law and Policy (CEPMLP), University of Dundee. She has been involved in project management in several countries and several research projects on broader energy issues.
